Overseas Student base and source to be diversified for a more Robust Australian Education System says TEQSA

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TESQA) has initiated a meticulous scrutiny into the practices, methods and sources installed by Australian Universities to attract overseas students to the country for higher education.

The Universities, after a report based on a joint study submitted by three mainland states; Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, were found wanting. The study concluded that the country sources that home-grown universities access to attract foreign students are limited and the English Proficiency Tests taken by overseas students needs a concerted look and inspection.

China for instance has not been bringing in the numbers it did in preceding years due to a quality makeover of its own state of higher educational systems. The percentage of incoming students, has dropped to single digits. This causes a serious reconsideration and over all diversification in sourcing out new countries to invite admissions. For more than 90 % of the Universities, overseas students are not a high priority in terms of income.

TEQSA Chief officials explain basics of the fault with the limited system, by stating that the social, political and economic climate of these source countries determine the migratory mentality of students and therefore, placing all their apples in one basket is doomed for failure for the education business.

In related issue, there have been red flag raised on the management of the English Proficiency Tests taken by these foreign students. There have been suggested recommendations for improvement of this system; improved collection of English language information in the Provider Registration and International Student Management System and the adoption of the ELICOS Standards 2018 into the National Standards for Foundation Programs.

An investigation into how many students are admitted, in spite, of performances that don’t meet the standard, has been set up.
