After 8:30 pm on Wednesday, a breakdown at the Costa Sur plant in Guanila caused a general blackout across Puerto Rico, leaving thousands of subscribers without electricity.
The Electricity Board (PREPA) warned last night that it could take more than 12 hours to reset the system. For its part, the LUMA Energy Consortium has already begun resuming service in some parts of the island.
So far we know this:
- The general outage was triggered by a fire last night in the switch area of the Costa Sur plant in Quanilla. The specific reasons for the failure are not yet known. LUMA resistor is “potentially” the cause of a circuit breaker failure. For its part, PREPA reported that – through its social networks – the “breaker” or output switch of Costa Surin Unit # 5 had erred in shutting down the 230 thousand volt plant.
- PREPA noted that it could take up to 12 hours to reset the system. However, LUMA Energy spokesman Jose Perez confirmed that electricity was only available to about 60,000 customers for more than 10 hours after the power outage.
- Luma added: “We now have a part of the transfer system from Mayakus to Kampalache recovered. We are waiting to build on the San Juan 6 system at 6am, which will begin the renovation in the metropolitan area.
- At this time, it is not specified whether he will be able to connect with the San Juan 6 unit.
- The Water and Sewerage Authority (AAA) reported that more than 160,000 subscribers were without water service due to the blackout.
- Mayra Olavarría Cruz, interim president of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), said in a written statement that all campuses would enter academic and administrative breaks due to the failure of the Costa Sur plant in Guanilla.
- Sacred Heart University (USC) and Pontifical Catholic University announced the academic holiday on Thursday today.
